Day 1: Balmaceda - Lago
General Carrera
After arrival at the airport of Balmaceda
we will start to drive
south on the Carretera Austral,
the unpaved extension of the
Panamerican Highway. We will
cross rivers, lakes, and valleys
and will be surrounded by mountains
and virgin forests. Our destination
is General Carrera Lake,
one of the world's greatest
reserves of clean fresh water.
When we arrive to Puerto Tranquilo
we board a motor boat to
get to the nearby "Catedrales de
Mármol", a peninsula of marble
caves of impressive shapes due
to the constant erosion from
water and wind over thousands
of years. We will be able to
enter the caves by boat to witness
the spectacular combination
of the colors of the water and the
whiteness of the rocks. From
here we will turn back to the
mainland and continue our drive
to finally arrive at the cabins of
Mallín Colorado where we will
be awaited by a delicious dinner
and stay overnight. (B, L, D)
Day 2: Hiking the Mallín
Colardo Forest or riding to
the Mallín Colorado Lagoon
Hiking option: A medium-length
hike through a native forest of
Lengas and Coigues, with ample
opportunities to see exotic birds
and abundant native plants.
Also, you will experience an
amazing view of glaciers, as
well as Lakes General Carrera,
Plomo, and Bertrand.
Horse riding option: A morning
riding trip through the surrounding
forest of Coigues, Ńirres and
Lengas includes wonderful views
over the Lake General Carrera,
Lake Bertrand and the breathtaking
Northern Ice Field which
reaches right into the lake. We
will arrive on a wide plain where
you can see the Mallín Colorado
lagoon, which has a marshy surface.
Lunch at the cabins and the
afternoon is at leisure. Dinner and
overnight at the cabins. (B, L, D)
Day 3: Tamango National
Reserve & Caleta Tortel
After breakfast we will leave the
cabins and start to drive south
along the Austral Highway to the
town of Cochrane. From here we
continue to the Tamango National
Reserve. This reserve is the
only area where you can
observe the huemul; Chiles
native deer and a highly protected
species. We hike through the
park, observing the abundant
vegetation and fauna. During
the hike we will enjoy a satisfying
lunch in spectacular surroundings.
We continue driving
|
south along the Carretera Austral
to Tortel, located in a deep
Fjord on the Pacific Ocean,
between northern and southern
ice field. This town was originally
founded to facilitate the
exploitation of the local cypress
trees. The streets consist of wooden
walkways. No cars will be
encountered. We spend the
night at a local family’s home (no
private bathroom). Overnight at
Caleta Tortel. (B, BL, D)
Day 4: Visit to Glacier Montt
After breakfast we embark our
boat to sail for about four hours
through the uninhabited Patagonian
fjords. We will disembark for
a freshly prepared lunch in one
of the fjords. From here, we go
directly to the immense glacier
Mont, which is slides down from
the Southern Ice field. We will be
able to appreciate this overwhelming
scenery with a nice
whisky on the rocks. We spend
the night at a local family's house
at the glacier, where there is no
private bathroom. Overnight at
Glacier Montt. (B, BL, D)
Day 5: Caleta Tortel -
Chacabuco Valley -
Mallín Colorado
We take the boat back to Tortel
and Puerto Vagabond. From
here we will drive back to the
cabins of Mallín Colorado; on
the way we will visit the Chacabuco
Valley with its landscape
that is similar to the Patagonian
Pampas of Argentina. Maybe
we will spot guanacos, condors,
sheep, and a large diversity of
birds.
At the cabins we will relax and
have a nice farewell dinner.
Overnight at the cabins of Mallín
Colorado. (B, L, D)
Day 6: Mallín Colorado
Following 5 days of adventure,
we will relax today at Mallín
Colorado. An easy walk to a fall
in the midst of a forest of Lenga
and Coigue trees will be our
activity for today. Of course, you
can choose from a variety of other
optional activities, flying in a
hydroplane surely would be a
very unique experience.
The plane takes off on the lake
and you can either decide to fly
to the San Rafael Glacier or take
a 1-hour tour over the Northern
Ice Field. (B,L,D)
