In the Strait of Magellan on the
foremost southern tip of South
America, a group of scientists
recently discovered the feeding
water sites where humpback
whales return every summer.
This specific "call of nature" has
probably been taking place for
centuries in this adjacent channel
surrounding the Carlos III
Island what gave place to the
naming of the area as the Whale
sound.
The government of Chile took
action and established the first
marine park in the country, to
ensure the conservation of these
natural treasures. Francisco
Coloane Marine Park" is located
in a sea and land extension of
67 thousand hectares /
165.560 acres surrounding the
Carlos III Island, in the Strait of
Magellan. The ultimate ecological
policies and the safest of possible
conditions have been
devised and achieved to allow
visitors to meet these marine
giants as well as the rest of the
incredibly diversified animal life
in these remote and dramatic
landscapes. Whale-watching,
dolphin-watching, penguin and
bird-watching, are available
between December 15th until the
15th May. Experienced personnel,
state of the art fleet and
equipment, and the comfortable
campsite at Carlos III, are devoted
to the study of natural life in
Patagonia, at its best conditions.
The zone also includes large sea
lion's colonies and important
nesting areas for the Magellan
penguin. Whale-watching in the
Francisco Coloane Marine Park
means scientific guidance, high
conservancy politics and all the
facilities of the Carlos III campsite:
warm welcome, modern
and comfortable, and delicious
food and drinks, made from the
best local products and international
