Day 1: Puerto Montt /
Puerto Varas - Ancud
Transfer from Puerto Varas or Puerto
Montt in a public bus without
guide. Bus and ferry ride to Chiloe
Island. At the bus terminal in
Ancud your local private guide
awaits you. You will leave the city
of Ancud behind and make your
way through a rolling farmland to
the rugged Pacific Coast of the
island. First you will visit the Punihuíl
penguin colony by zodiac to
visit the only place in the world
where Magellan and Humboldt
penguins nest side by side. You
will then be taken further along the
coast to an even more remote
area, from where you can hike
through native forest along deserted
beaches and past pastoral
farms to fully immerse yourself into
the natural and cultural charms of
Chiloe's rugged coast. In the
evening you will return to Ancud
and check into a comfortable hostel.
Dinner in a restaurant included.
Overnight in Ancud. (D)
Day 2: Sea Kayaking
Weather permitting; you can go to
the beach of Lechagua, just outside
Ancud for a kayak excursion
in the Bay of Quetalmahue. The
area is not only rich in birdlife but
also hosts a variety of shellfish
which are regularly collected by
local divers. If conditions permit,
you can paddle to old Spanish
cannon batteries from the 1800s
for impressive views of numerous
volcanoes across the waters on the
mainland. Return to Ancud. Overnight
in the same Hostel. The evening
will be free to explore the town
and eat where you please. (B)

Day 3: Tenaun - East coast
After breakfast you will leave
Ancud and drive through the countryside
to the picturesque village of
Tenaun. It is home to of one of the
16 churches declared UNESCO
World Heritage. From the village
you will enjoy a gorgeous view of
the islands of the archipelago and
the snow-capped Andes in the distance.
You will go for a long afternoon
walk though the countryside,
past oxen plowing fields and typical
examples of traditional Chilote
culture. Return to the village in the
evening to enjoy a traditional dish,
curanto (seafood & meat cooked
over hot rocks), with a local family
and spend the night in their oceanside
home. This is a superb way
to get to know the island of Chiloé
and its welcoming inhabitants.

Day 4: Ancud - Puerto Montt
/ Puerto Varas
On this final day you will have
time for a lovely walk along the
beach; where you will see many
fishing boats laying on their sides
waiting for high tide. After visiting
the village's unique church you
will have to bid your hosts goodbye.
On your way out of town you
will stop to take a short walk to a
beautiful 40-meter waterfall cascading
through the forest. You will
arrive in Ancud at approximately
02:00 p.m. for your final lunch on
the island. Afterwards you will be
driven to the bus terminal from
which you will take a regular bus
(without guide) to the mainland to
Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas. (B,L)
